Albert "Al" R. Hamel Sr, 84, passed away peacefully at Salemhaven in Salem, NH on December 30, 2023.
Born in Lawrence, MA, he was 1 of 10 children of Joseph and Yvonne (Dube) Hamel.
Al is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joanna (Pulverenti) Hamel, his children, Donna and Albert Jr., daughter-in-law Linda, grandson Cooper, sisters Yvette Richards and Terry Waggett and their families, brother Roger Hamel and his family, and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his parents Joseph and Yvonne, sister Doris Alakel, and brothers Roland, Raymond, twin brother Father Joseph, Richard and Paul Sr.
Al attended Barber School after high school graduation and was a master barber in Lawrence, MA for over 10 years. He then went to Engineering School where he earned his Stationary Fireman's License and worked at Merrimack Paper Company for 30 years before retiring.
Al was an active member of Saints Mary and Joseph Parish and did the collections each Sunday at Mary Queen of Peace Church. He had a very strong faith and liked to pray the Rosary.
Al was a member of The Knights of Columbus for over 60 years where he held offices such as Inside Guard and Warden. He did many activities for charity. Al was an active member of the Salem Senior Center for many years.
Al was in charge of hosting his annual Hamel Family Christmas Party which he cherished. He loved to plan the entertainment including performing magic tricks, singing and doing skits with siblings, his son, wife, and other family members. Al loved to play ping pong, horseshoes, cards, golf, and did unending amounts of crossword and sudoku puzzles. He was an avid Boston sports fan. He was the Hamel Family Horseshoe Tournament champion almost every year since it began in 1983.
Al was very funny and always had a joke to tell, and will be remembered for his great sense of humor, infectious smile and laugh, and most of all, his love for his family. He will be greatly missed.
The family is grateful for the prayers and visits to Al from family and friends and for the excellent care Al received from Salemhaven.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 6 at 10:30 AM at Mary Queen of Peace Church, 200 Lawrence Rd. Salem, NH. Please arrive by 10:15 AM. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Salem, NH.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Saints Mary and Joseph Parish or The Knights of Columbus.
