On Monday, July 18th, 2022, Elizabeth Cameron, 78, of Danville, NH, passed away peacefully in her sleep. Four days earlier while picking pears in her garden on a beautiful sunny day she suffered a catastrophic brain aneurysm. Her family would like to thank Exeter hospital for the kindness and care Elizabeth received in her final days.

Elizabeth was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1944 to Joseph and Elizabeth Cassidy, with her family eventually relocating to Manchester, NH. She was one of the first non-nursing school female students accepted to St. Anselm College, where she earned her degree in 1967.

She married jazz saxophonist James Cameron in 1968 and together they raised three children. Shortly after graduation, Elizabeth was hired as an art teacher at Salem High School in NH and she would retire over thirty years later as the head of the art department. After retirement, she went on to teach printmaking at what is now the Institute of Art and Design at New England College in Manchester, NH and taught her most recent and final class this past spring. She was a gifted and thoughtful educator who loved not only the process of creating art but also the connections she made with her students and fellow educators.

Elizabeth was a remarkable fine artist who enjoyed different mediums, including drawing, printmaking, weaving, and quilting. She was a long-time juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen as well as many other artistic and educator-based organizations. Much of her artwork reflected her deep love of nature and gardening. She was a member of the Master Gardeners of NH and provided her family with fresh vegetables, pickles, jellies and jams, and beautiful flora for over fifty years.

Elizabeth was an avid reader with a love for detective mysteries, and she was also a huge supporter of public libraries. She served on the board of trustees at the Colby Memorial Library and was likely their most prolific borrower as well. Elizabeth was a kind and thoughtful person who had a calming effect on many who met her. She was a highly competent person and though shy, she often ended up in leadership positions as people naturally deferred to her quiet intellect. She was not a loud person but had a sarcastic sense of humor that was at once biting and hilarious. She was an incredibly strong, independent woman who fought for equality her entire life.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband James, her daughter Lonnae, her daughter Heather Turrell and her husband Tyrone, her son James and his wife Mary, and her granddaughter Freyja. The eldest of seven siblings, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her brothers Joseph Cassidy and James Cassidy, and her youngest brother John Cassidy who passed earlier this year. She is survived by her brother Daniel Cassidy, her sisters Mary Scamman and Patricia Cassidy Bowman, and her sisters-in-law Marylin Proctor and Rosalie Malia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held from 1-3 pm on Friday, July 29th at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home in Salem, NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J.
