Francis "Obie" E. O'Brien, 70 of Salem, NH passed away Friday, October 20, 2017 in the W. Roxbury VA Hospital, W. Roxbury, MA. He was born in South Boston, a son of the late Andrew and Helen (Roulo) O'Brien.

Francis proudly served his country as a field radio operator with the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of corporal. Following his discharge he graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston. He worked as a prison guard for the Portsmouth Prison. Francis later went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in South Boston for 20 years as a maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1997. He was a huge NE Patriot's fan, loved cooking and had a dry sense of humor. Humble to the core, he would also help anyone who needed it. Francis enjoyed spending time with his family and taking trips to NH, Foxwoods and the mountains.

He is survived by his two daughters; Kristin O'Brien of Salem and Stacy Lee O'Brien of Manchester, NH, his sister; Anne Brennan and her husband George of South Boston, by his good friend; Dave Verge of Salem and by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years; Josephine (Lavenia) O'Brien in 2010, his brother; James O'Brien and by his grandson; Alexander Glennon.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm in the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home Thursday at 6:30pm followed by military honors. Cremation will follow.
