Frederick D. Watts, 93, of Salem, NH passed away on Monday, October 26, 2020 in the Greystone Farm at Salem Assisted Living. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1927, the son of the late Willoughby F. and Emma A. (Jacobson) Watts.
Mr. Watts was raised in Methuen, MA and graduated from the Edward F. Searles High School, the Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA, the University of Virginia and pursued studies in Middle Eastern Affairs at the American University, Beirut, Lebanon. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Mr. Watts taught U.S. History, Economics and Cultural Anthropology at Wilbraham and Monson Academy for 40 years where he also served as Dean of Students for 15 years, was Director of Alumni and Development for 12 years and Interim Headmaster from 1988-1989. He was also a trustee at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall for 11 years. Mr. Watts was a seasoned international traveler, enjoyed reading, music, the arts, walking, nature and his summer retreat at Salisbury Beach, MA.
He is survived by his cousins; June R. Belanger of Methuen, MA, Janice Hawthorne-Twaites of Phoenix, AZ, Marilyn Wilson of Champaign, IL and Nancy Noyes of NH. Mr. Watts will be remembered fondly by multiple generations of cousins, extended family, former students and fellow faculty members.
Fred was predeceased by his cousins Wendal Whatmough, Gilsa Ostmann, Marilyn Jacobson, Shirley Demers, Ruth Whatmough and David Jacobson.
Visitation will be on Saturday, Nov. 14 th from 1:00 – 4:00 PM followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem, NH 03079. It will be live streamed in the lower right corner of our website on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020 at 4:00PM. Mercy meal will follow. There will a private burial at a later date. Masks are required and social distance will be practiced.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's name may be sent to the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, Inc., 192 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844 to the Wilbraham and Monson Academy, 423 Main St., Wilbraham, MA 01095 or to a charity of one's choice.
