Hubert F. O'Hearn
Sept. 19, 1925 - Dec. 12, 2021
Salem, New Hampshire

The dash between the dates feels insufficient to represent a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness but it is asked to do so here.

Hubert began his life as the son of John and Mary O'Hearn in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in East Boston with his two sisters, Mary Smith and Rita O'Hearn who have predeceased him.

As a young child watching the construction of Suffolk Downs, he developed what became a lifelong passion for horse racing and later worked at the track as a runner for those placing bets. While still in High School, on March 6th 1943, he was sworn into the Marine Corps to serve in the Second World War. He spent his years in World War II as a Radar Specialist in the South Pacific. Though he was discharged after WWII, he was called back in to serve in the Korean War.

There he was in the reserves until he met his first wife, Mildred Afholderbach. They married in 1951 and they raised their family in Reading, Mass. While Mildred passed away in 1995, Hubert is survived by 2 sons, William (Sally) and Michael (Stacy), 2 daughters, Cindy (Ray), and Mary Ann (Tom) and 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Not content with an idle retirement, Hubert became involved with VFW Post 8546 in Salem New Hampshire. He could be seen selling Poppies or out putting flags on the graves, or taking part in ceremonies for Pearl Harbor day or holding a cook-out for the Vets up in Tilton, NH. He went on to become Commander of the Post and his final job there was as Chaplain.

While working there, he was fortunate to meet and marry Shirley Grady. They enjoyed twenty-three years together not only with Hubert's family but also with her family and her children, Ricky, Robert, and Roberta and their families. In his final years, he spent more time at home with Shirley.

He enjoyed the old TV comedy shows, the old Western movies and, of course, spent Thursday through Sunday watching horse racing from all around the globe. Dad had a wonderful life and taught us all to enjoy life and wake up each day and just be happy. He will be dearly missed.
