Joan Mary (Farrell) Moon, age 89, passed away peacefully on January 26 after a brief illness.
Joan was known for her personal strength, wisdom, grace, and kindness. She was born and educated in New York, earning her BA summa cum laude at Pace University and Masters Degree in English Literature from Fordham University while earning several academic honors.
Joan served as a Professor of English until her retirement. She taught at Boston State University and University of Massachusetts, Boston. She was a mentor and inspiration to many students over the years.
Joan lived most of her life in Brookline, MA with her beloved husband, Professor and author, John Ellis Moon. They traveled the world together and shared a love for life, literature, art and history. She lived her last few years in Salem NH, at the Residence at Salem Woods.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, her two brothers Mike Farrell and Tim Farrell, and her stepdaughter, Laurelle Moon Conte.
She is dearly missed by her stepson John Moon and his wife Susan; stepdaughter Margaret Moon Hames and husband Bill; son-in-law Bob Conte; grandchildren Heather Moon, Chandler Moon, David Conte, Angela Moon Conte, and their families; sister-in-law Eleanor Richardson, and several beloved nephews and nieces in the Farrell family.
A private memorial will be held at a later date. Donations in her honor may be made to the "Joan Moon Teaching Excellence Award" at UMass, Boston, attention: Vanessa Carta, Director of Donor Engagement, 100 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, MA 02125-3393.
