Kenneth Akerley, 88, of Salem, NH, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026. He was a devoted family man, proud veteran, and tireless community volunteer whose kindness and leadership touched countless lives.
Ken grew up in Charlestown, MA, the son of the late Catherine and George Akerley. He served in the US Marines. Ken worked as a Quality Control Manager for Polaroid. Ken carried the values of his upbringing throughout his life. He was a longtime member of the American Legion and a dedicated Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Peterson Council #4442 council in Salem, NH. Ken was a Past Grand Knight and he organized numerous blood drives and personally donated many pints of blood over the years. Ken was a longtime member and former president of the SARC and he was a member of the Salem Housing Authority. His commitment to service was evident in his many years as an active volunteer and his deep dedication to community causes earned him the Ganley Award in 2019 in recognition of his outstanding volunteer service.
Ken was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Margaret Akerley, and his siblings, Jane Botticelli, George Akerley and Paul Akerley.
He is survived by his five children, Kenneth Jr. James, William, Elizabeth and Thomas; his nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will cherish the many memories of his love, strength, and engagement with them.
Ken's legacy of service, faith, and family will live on in all those he inspired.
Visitation will be Thursday, June 11, 2026 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St. Salem, NH. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Friday, June 12th at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Church, Salem, NH. Please arrive by 9:45 AM. Burial will be Monday, June 22nd at NH State Veterans Cemetery at 10AM. Please arrive by 9:45 AM.
