Robert "Bob" J. Gaughan, Sr., 82 of Andover, MA, formerly of Salem, NH passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023 in the Academy Manor, Andover, MA. He was born August 2nd, 1940 in Boston, MA a son of the late Robert and Ann (Manfra) Gaughan. He was raised and educated in the Dorchester and East Boston sections of Boston.
In the early years, Bob was a cub scout, altar boy, and a member of the Boston Boys Clubs of America. He played park league football and several years of league hockey. Upon graduation from East Boston High in 1958, he joined the Army National Guard. He served 8 years during the Vietnam era, service with the first Medical tank Battalion (Patton) 110th Armor Division and later with the 721st Ordinance Company. Upon completion of service, he received an honorable discharge.
He worked for many years for Purity Supreme supermarkets in various positions from clerk to district manager. He was a store manager for most of his career in locations throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire prior to his retirement.
In his free time Bob was an avid sports fan and loved to watch his favorites the Patriots and Bruins. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events and competitions. He really appreciated the time-shared during summer vacations with trips to Myrtle Beach, Disney World, and family cruises to Bermuda.
Other interests during retirement included reading factual history events of the war eras. Along with continuing to keep his mind sharp he also joined the Salem NH athletic club to keep physically fit. Throughout his retirement he thoroughly enjoyed belonging to their Young at Heart program with its social and athletic events where he created many long-lasting relationships.
Bob will be deeply missed by his children Debra Capozzi and husband Victor, Donna Redshaw, Kimberly Capozzi and husband Michael; his grandchildren Christopher Capozzi, Joseph Capozzi, Anthony Capozzi and wife Alexis, Sabrina Capozzi, Michael Capozzi, Emilee Redshaw, Brigette Gaughan, and Brody Gaughan; his brother Dennis Gaughan and wife Susan, brother Joseph and wife Sharon and by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many close longtime friends. Bob was predeceased by his son; Robert J. Gaughan Jr., brother; Rick Gaughan, and granddaughter; Christina Capozzi.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2023 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm in the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem, NH. A funeral service will follow at 5:00pm Tuesday in the funeral home, followed by military honors. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to The Homeland Heroes Foundation, 10 Delaware Dr., #1, Salem, NH 03079.
