Robert H. Matton, 87 of Windham, NH passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2023 in the High Pointe Hospice House, Haverhill, MA following a period of failing health. He was born in Lawrence, MA, the son of the late Rene and Ida (Trudel) Matton.
Robert grew up and was educated in Lawrence. He graduated from Central Catholic in Lawrence where he was a member of the undefeated and state champion football team in 1954. He was a Boy Scout and later became and Eagle Scout. Robert proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Navy. He worked for and ran the front counter in the Lawrence, MA Post Office for 29 ½ years and later served as the Post Master in Windham, NH for 12 years. Following his retirement, he and his wife Lorraine became snowbirds and enjoyed their time together in New Smyrna Beach, FL where they made many friends. Robert was a member of the Hoodkroft Country Club in Derry, NH, held the title of Treasurer for the Windham Police Association, was President of the Central Catholic Men's Guild and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Methuen. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, playing cards and shuffleboard. Robert was a New England sports fan and enjoyed watching the Patriots. The most important part of his life was his family; he loved them immensely and was so proud to have become a grandparent and great-grandparent.
He is survived by his daughters; Cheryl Goguen and husband Denis of Derry, NH, Karen Gore and husband James of Salem, NH, Laurie Costa and husband James of Salem and Diane Peacock and husband Craig of Salem. He is also survived by his six grandchildren; Casey, Mandy, Jimmy, Jeffrey, Nick and Sophia, by his three great-grandchildren; Bode, Rory and Cooper and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife; Lorraine (Vautour) Matton in 2009, by his son; Robert H. Matton, Jr. and by his sisters; Claire DeMange and Eileen DeRoche.
Following cremation a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 11:00am in St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2 Searles Rd, Windham, NH. Family will greet friends Thursday from 10:15am until the time of service in the church. Burial with military honors will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, 130 N. Lowell St., Methuen, MA. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
