Virginia M. (Whippen) Murphy, 92, a four year resident of Andover, MA, formerly of Stoneham, MA and a longtime resident of Salem, NH passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020 at her home. She was born in Boston, MA, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Chase) Whippen.
Mrs. Murphy grew up and was educated in Brighton, MA. She graduated from Brighton High School and later graduated from the Boston Girl's Clerical School and business school. Mrs. Murphy worked as a purchaser for Marshalls, working in their corporate office in Woburn, MA. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Salem. She volunteered at Salemhaven for over 20 years and was a member and volunteer at the Salem Senior Center. She was very proud to have received a state award recognizing her for her volunteerism. Mrs. Murphy enjoyed reading, word puzzles, sewing, gardening, exercising, dancing, especially country line dancing and going to the theatre and seeing plays. She was very devoted to her family and very caring with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her son; Warren Murphy and his wife Diane of Stoneham, MA, her daughter; Lorraine Walsh and her husband Kevin of Kennebunkport, ME, her three grandchildren; Joseph Murphy and his wife Kirby Vigneau, Kayleigh Walsh and Brenna Husovsky and her husband Vincent. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren; Harrison, Lyla, Andre, Owen and Joseph, her brother; Joseph Whippen of Florida, two sisters; Jane Walsh of Framingham, MA and Margaret Savilonis of Kingsland, GA and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; Joseph Murphy, her brother; Harold and her sisters; Frances, Ellen and Charlotte.
A visiting hour will be held Wednesday, November 25, 2020 from 10:00am to 11:00am in the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem, NH. A funeral will follow Wednesday at 11:00am in the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Lindenwood Cemetery, Stoneham, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Salemhaven Activity Fund, 23 Geremonty Dr., Salem, NH 03079.
